Start with Bendigo's mining story
Central Deborah Gold Mine offers a close look at the workings of a Bendigo gold mine. Begin above ground among the heritage-listed buildings, machinery and interpretive displays, then consider a guided Mine Experience Tour to go below the surface.
Going underground
The Mine Experience Tour descends 61 metres into the underground tunnels and takes about 75 minutes. A guide explains the conditions miners worked in during the gold-rush era, giving the site useful context beyond the surface exhibits.
Prepare for the visit
For an underground tour, wear flat enclosed footwear and arrive with time to get ready. A hard hat is required below ground, and the mine is cool at an average of 14 degrees, so bring an extra layer. The operator advises booking ahead for underground tours, particularly in busy periods.
